Everyone knows the Civic and many of you may have owned one at one time. It is one of the world’s most popular cars. Many people know that Honda made a sporty version of the civic which took a light small hatchback and made it go faster. Honda was the king of the hot hatches in the 90s and this was the car that stood out.
Hot hatches are fun to drive given their light weight, powerful engines, and nimble size. These cars were very popular in areas of Asia and Europe where small vehicles work well with the tight roads. North America did not get the SiR Civic, and instead only got the Si.
So what are the Americans missing? For starters the SiR came with an evolution of the B16a engine over the previous generation and this time offering 170ps. The Si only got the 125hp engine. The JDM engine was a full twin VTEC system and really screamed at the higher RPMs. This engine was notable since it made more than 100ps specific displacement per liter without forced induction. Not many engines by today’s standard can do that.
The vehicle was embraced by the tuner crowd all over the world so expect to see models that have been modified in one way of another. Although many have been raced, you can still find models which are fairly stock and in great condition.
In Japan there was also the SiR II model which is really just a higher outfitted model. Here you could get options like a sunroof, ABS, LSD, traction control, power windows and locks, and air bags.
The Civic SiR was a widely popular car and many examples are for sale at any time. Prices average around 120000 yen for a nice model. For 170ps and a quick little ride this is a very good deal. Contact us if you have any questions.
